No fancy dresses or jewelry this week. I'm planning to catch up with some sleep this weekend :)

I'm just back from istanbul, will blog about that tomorrow, but for now you can't get me out of my PJ's!

Our Creative Space...

While having a nice warm up with the macrame basket, and some left over from the thread we've used. I desided to make some straps for bags with macrame.
I didn't thought it would take so long to make it, but the result is even better then I hoped for!


I sewed the ends with some fake leather for strength. This will become a nice bag when we use it. I'll be making more in between as it is quiet a zen job; head on zero and just knot away :)

Button Wednesday

We are having fun with our button machine, experimenting with all kind of materials.
The results are fun too, little pieces with lovely details.


Mum made some ribbon embroidered buttons, we have attended ribbon embroidery lessons a few years ago and used this technique with different kind of things. The results are almost 3 dimentional and pretty fast compaired to normal embroidery.

Mess is also an important factor while creating :)

The results are super cute and romantic buttons, use one to adorn for a bag, blouse, jewelry and you are ready to go! They will be available in our supply shop today.

Going to a city with an estimated population of 17 million made me think of buildings. When you see this I'll be in Istanbul after a 12 hour bus drive, don't know how much of me will be left :)

Exotic

The Turkish pop singer Tarkan is, I believe, also well known in the rest of Europe.

He has brought out a new album, and to congratulate hem, being a national pride as he is, the mayor of Kastamonu, presented hem with a bunch of 41 garlic heads.


Why garlic heads instead of a boring bunch of flowers? Not because our handsome boy is a vampire, nor vampires abound in Turkey. But garlic is the universal remedy against the evil eye, so that his new album won’t flop. And why 41? Forty is a hallowed number here, also meant to ward off the devil, so is the confinement of a new born and its mother 40 days long, as is also the period of heavy mourning after a death.

To ward off the evil eye –always lurking- is no better system that to say Maşallah !! (Praise the Lord) forty times, and then you add one extra for good measure in case that counting till forty is a problem.

So in this simple, salubrious and well proven way, the mayor of Kastamonu makes sure that Tarkan’s new album will be again a great success.

Yayyy….keep it weird!!

Our Creative Space...

When in Amsterdam a couple of months ago, we saw in the window of an antique dealer these earrings, made with knotted human hair. Human hair is an amazing product, containing chemicals that preserve it for hundreds or even thousands of years.

I knew that human hair jewelry was very popular in the nineteenth century, but an internet search showed me that it has been made since the 16th century and even more interesting, it is still being made nowadays and there is even an official Victorian Hairwork Society Website, where hair artists can advertise their products, but also where people can advertise and sell their hair!!



Anyhow, we liked the idea, but not so much the supplies LOL, so we have tried to make something like that, but without the eeek-factor. Knotted in nylon thread it is a very nice synthese of new and old. The hardest part was to get two of the same size, but we got a pair at last and more will be coming!

Button Wednesday

Button Wednesday is hosted by Petronella aka Kraplap who has a huge love for buttons. As our own button machine arrived a few days ago we thought it would be perfect to join the button fun!


Mum is like a little kid with a new toy, she has been playing with it for days, nice quiet in the house :D

We are using new fabrics, vintage fabrics, new and old lace, linen, and vintage embroidery. They are fun to make and the results are super cute!

Summer is in full blaze, hot weather, lot's of sun, ice cream and beach visits will continue for another two months here. Most of the day we stay inside near the airco to be able to breath :)

What the Postman brought and a Finished UFO

We recieved some delicious packages this week. This one is very special, an Antique Traditional Costume Doll from China. P8 is a huge collector, she collects all kind of traditional costume related items, as her collection has grown so large she is letting go parts of it, and shares them in her vintage shop. I love the fine details, especially the hands.



He also has a spare outfit, a gorgeous hat and lovely shoes :)

Another package was a fun suprise with a fun reason too. Martice, a europeanstreetteam friend, is working on her Thesis but was escaping often to our forums to chat. I have 'kicked' her out quiet often so that she could finish it.

I'm glad we are still friends after all those kicks ;) And she sent a fun package to thank me for it, thank you too, Marta!

Last but not least, is a lovely photo album from Nauli, which we won by winning her challenge a couple of weeks ago.
I'll make sure to use it for a special day to remember!
