Get the Look Vol.7

Kind of a man cave but I dig it :) The maps and mid century chair are always a hit with me.

While magazines are maybe not as popular as they used to be with the internet and all its gossip and what-not it provides, I still like a good old magazine rack near by.

My eternal love for kilims is still going strong, this home has a lot of kilim and boho going on, the kilim is my favorite part, and the cool plants.

I love old shelves, cabinets and cubbies, it seems like everything looks cool in them :)

My Diving Adventures Continue

For the past 3 weeks, I've been diving every Saturday and thoroughly enjoying it! This time someone had a camera with them so I asked to have a few pictures too as I do not have a under water camera for deeper water.

The waters here are not as colorful as some tropical places but you can still see some cool and odd things under water.

I initially thought this to be part of the branch, like a flower, put it turned out to be a nudibranch, the Flabellina affinis to be precise as there are hundreds of types.

We also went through a cave, it was a tight swim so we went though one by one and actually did not swim but rather let ourselves drop to not damage the life attached to the rocks.

I need to find a way to figure out what these weird things are, as soon as I do I'll update the post with names :) Update: thanks to Mum's excellent investigating skills, turns out that this is a Nudibranch too, Latin name is Discodoris atromaculata common name 'Swiss Cow' :).

A Starfish cozily in between seasponge.

A large Lion fish, beautiful as they are they are also extremely poisonous.

Another weird creature that I need to look up, those two antennas are its eyes, but further than that it is not really clear what it is :) Update: yet another Nudibranch! This one is Umbraculum Umbraculum or the English name Patella Nudibranch.

I hope you enjoyed my dive too :)!

The Beauty of Recycling

''Clothes are the 2nd largest source of pollution, after oil...''

Did you know that? Well it is not surprising considering that a pair of jeans with a t-shirt (which you very likely might be wearing right now) costs about 12.500 liters of water to produce, and that is just the water no transport and electricity in the equation yet a lot of resources to say the least, and unfortunately a lot of it goes to waste as things are thrown away once out of fashion.

A great solution? Buy 2nd hand, buy less, repair, give to someone who needs it. There is so much 2nd hand clothing that still 85% end up in landfills, which is just ridiculous.

We have always been extremely resourceful in re-using, repairing and recycling fabrics and clothing's for our own items and for those we sell.
Both our clothing and bag shop are 95% made out of vintage fabrics, recycled clothing etc, it is just very satisfying to give old things new life and to avoid things going to landfills.
But with each thing we make we always end up with small pieces of fabrics, these cuts end up in these 4 huge baskets. These baskets have been here for  more than 10 years and we constantly use fabric of them. We've made dozens of bags with patchworks out of these small pieces. Also inner pockets for the bags are chosen from here. But it never gets less as new pieces are also added all the time.

So in an attempt to get these baskets a little emptier Mum knitted fabric strips into this awesome bag. Just cutting the strips was already a lot of work but the result is gorgeous.

I hand stitched straps to them and added the lining, but the knitted part is of course the true labor of love part.

We love how it turned out, and even though a lot of fabric was used the basket doesn't seem emptier at all lol :)

So I came with the bright idea to make an ottoman with this knitted fabric, I will cut the fabrics and knot them to each other this time around. As it was my idea I will have to suffer some consequences too but this might actually make some difference in the stash of rags :)

Under the Sea

It might not come as a huge surprise to find out that I'm a professional Scuba Diver, considering our love for the sea. However I haven't been diving for the past 12 years!

I finally went diving on Saturday, my first dive was not deep just to be sure I remembered everything, I staid more than an hour but only around 5 meters depth.

There were lots of fish there, and I so regret not going much sooner, I am planning to go once a week now as I enjoy it so much and the sea is so close by, it is ridiulous not to dive :)

My second dive was up to 22 meters deep, there was an old shipwreck but as my underwater camera is only good till 5 meters I couldn't take any pictures.

Above the sea I enjoyed the lovely breeze and sound of the sea :)

If you have always wanted to dive, do it, its great fun :)

From Trash to Treasure

Finally another furniture project finished! The heat is not really motivating, especially as a lot has to be done outside. This sad little ottoman had some cute legs, but that was the only thing that was nice.

The fabric and foam were in a horrible state, the legs were wobbling too, all in all it needed a lot of TLC.

Peeling off all the fabric caused me two big blisters, the wood is hard and the fabric was stapled at 3 places.

After sanding, securing and painting the feet the ottoman already looks much better.

Time to cut the kilims.

Stapling, webbing, fabric and foam.

Sewing the kilims and trims together.

As the wood was so hard it was very hard to hammer all the nails in place (FYI I was wearing shorts :)).

But the result was worth all the sweat, tears and blisters.

Giving these sad furniture pieces a new life is so satisfying, especially as we also use vintage fabrics and embroideries.

The ottoman is available at StarHomeStudio among other one of a kind furniture pieces and home decor.
