Tender Loving Care

I scored this cute but sad little side table with hand carvings a few weeks ago.

It clearly used to be beautiful, all made of heavy solid wood with inlays on the top and hand carvings but it was not protected against the sun and other outdoors elements.

We removed the top, cleaned off the leftover varnish and reinforced the skeleton.

I then painted it with 5 colors of paint, layer for layer from dark to light to let the carvings pop.

Elastic webbing on the top instead of heavy wood.

Foam and betting.

And beautiful vintage Kilim pieces, as you can see I used the paint colors to match the kilim.

Nothing is straight or perfect as all materials are handmade and vintage, but we are embracing the imperfections :)

When Life Gives you Lemons, make Lemon cake

Back in March someone gave me this bowl because I like 'old stuff'. I said 'thanks' but inside I was thinking 'ugh'. Mum however saw potential in this bowl that was missing a handle.

'We'll make a ship out of it', she said. I thought it would be a very ugly ship :)

We first thought of hiding the feet behind some pieces of driftwood but that would cover a lot of the 'ship' so I thought of removing the feet. Even with a torch they wouldn't budge so I took the bowl to town and had it cut with some more heavy duty tools as a hand saw didn't do the trick either.

Old knitting needles, drilled base and some Sugru (special silicone glue which was about the only new thing we used for this project) started to make this look like some kind of ship.

Then with wires the details on the mast.

And then spray painting it all white, as it was going to become a 'ghost ship' Mum said and finally I started to love it.

'It needs a Mermaid, a decent pirate ship has a mermaid on the front', Mum came back with a mermaid in 2 seconds, a piece she had bought about 10 years ago on Etsy and had been hanging in our atelier ever since. I bent the arms down and she was ready to be attached.

A light spray paint to let her blend in.

The sails, first with paper.

Then with Mode podged hardened vintage lace. A green plastic net (found on the beach) an anchor made of a beach found fish hook and some more details and paint...

Attached to an impressive piece of driftwood and this is not an ugly bowl anymore. I loooove it!

We scratched off some of the paint so that it still has some old charm.

The little flags are made of soft metal and match the wavy hair of the mermaid.

A definite one of a kind, if you have any ugly bowls, please give them to me :D

Get The Look Vol.11

I think part of the plant fun are the pots they are in. Love a nice group of plants. And if you'd like a big pot the one below is from our shop a real old beauty.

I'm not a fan of hunting, but back in the day when there were no supermarkets it was a necessity and the bow and arrow was one of the tools used for hunting. I do love the various shapes they come in. Ours is very primitive and entirely hand carved.

I love dainty modern metal furniture, the of west elm are cool, and ours is maybe even cooler :)

A cabinet of curiosities is not everyone's cup of tea, but I do love prettily arranged (cruelty free) bookshelves with some natural biology in the mix. Our tortoise shell is naturally found in the mountains, we hardly have squirrels but we have tons of tortoises rooming around the forests here.

Trying to Capture the Perseids

These past few night I've been out and about trying to photograph a meteor shower during the annual Perseid shower. The only time I caught something is here above, you can see it at the right side of the mountain.

I even checked the light pollution map site to find a dark place near our town.

Even though I didn't manage a 'shower' as I didn't manage to stay awake till 4 am, I'm still happy with my first attempt to shoot stars, hopefully next year I'll do better :D

Our neighbors ugly house looks nice like this :)

Number 10, again...

While I was away during my trip to Seferihisar, Mum called me on my last evening telling me 'I've sent you an email, did you see it?' I said 'no', and asked her what it was about, when she said 'just look at it and let me know what you think', I knew she was up to no good...
It was a adoption ad on Facebook... Of this little black fur ball. Who was in Ä°zmir, 1 hour away from were I was but 3 hours from our home so I could pick her up on my return back home... I resisted for quite a while but Mum is a stubborn goat  *sigh* and she wanted her so badly as she looks like Elsie, her favorite doggie ever who we lost 3 years ago. FYI we adopted Olivia with the same excuse...

I called them but they did not want to release her without her being neutered first so I would have to go back 1 week later or so. This was on Sunday evening.

Monday afternoon, I just had driven 4 hours and was back home for just half an hour they called me back telling me I could pick her up anyway... aaarrgggggg

I rested on Tuesday and we went to pick her up on Wednesday, a total of 6 hours driving, I'm an angelic daughter which my mother will never admit. While the shelter was in surprising good shape...

The doggie was in a very bad shape, her fur was all matted and parts were gone leaving bald spots. She also smelt horribly and her eyes were all droopy and dirty.

Of course this does make it up for the long journey as black dogs (and cats) are already much less likely to be adopted, this sad girl didn't have much of a chance.

I groomed and washed her right after arrival and after that she wouldn't leave my side, she also wanted to meet the rest of the pack right away and she adjusted in a matter of hours.

We do not know her exact story and for now we are just letting her recouping, there were vets at the shelter but we will be taking her to our vet soon. Her legs are very thin with barely any muscle, I suspect she was in a cage for a while and the lack of walking didn't do her good. They all have a story non are very happy but we do our best to fix that :)

We called her Betty Boo -Boo :)
