Madrid 1

I took many pictures during our stay in Madrid, so I will make several posts about our trip. I will start at the beginning, which is not the beginning of our stay but the beginning of the beginning; the house and street where my mother was raised and has spent her entire childhood until she moved to Holland.

It is actually a small miracle that the house is still there, Madrid with a metropolitan area population of 6.5 million has mostly high buildings where lots of people can live without covering too much ground, as it goes with most cities. However although most of these little 2 store houses are gone a few, including the one my mother lived, are still remaining.

They are clearly renovated not long ago and seem to be protected. The small houses are surrounded with high buildings, which makes it even more fairy tale-like as if you come in a secret place within the city.

A little further away is a large women's prison, my mother remembered that she always found it odd to hear children behind the high walls, which where of course the children of the prisoners.

The building next to the prison was entirely covered with an art piece clearly related to the prison and freedom, which was kind of amazing and surreal.

Right across the prison is the elementary school my mum went to. Back in the day boys and girls were separated with a high wall and the kids were wearing uniforms, now however they are all together in their own colorful clothing.

Stay tuned for more pictures :)

While everyone is sleeping...

I've been waking up on ridiculous hours lately, like 6 am when not even the birds are singing and it is still dark and totally quiet.

The only advantage of waking up so early is that I get to see the sun rise, so I took some pictures at 6.30 am without a sip of coffee in my system yet, quite an achievement :)

And a new day has started... Good morning!

Wharf Inspiration II

It is this time of the year again, when the beaches are abandoned and the boats are on shore for their annual fix. Peeling paint, rusty bits and nature's work gives amazing details.

This boat I found particularly interesting.

At first I thought that the old paint was scrapped off, but when I looked closer to the rubbish I saw that it was not paint but hundreds of shells.

One side of the shells was still natural while the other side had blue paint stuck to it. I never have seen such a thing and none of the other boats had it. Normally boats are here made of wood, this one was plastic, maybe the shells like that.

And here are the first pieces with their inspirational pictures, we'll make more soon as we still have plenty of pictures.

The crab agate is catching the colors and textures so well that we kept the earrings simple.

I love the rustic and not-perfect look of this one. So the earrings became a bit asymmetrical with rough kyanite, pearls and silver plated findings.

I love this blue with white, mysterious and fresh at the same time, these earrings are again made with crab agate, simple but gorgeous.

Stay tuned for more wharf inspired jewelry :)

The Night Circus

For years now I saw every month traffic coming in to our shop from the website, ErinMorgenstern. I checked it out a few years back and saw that she is a writer. No picture of our item could be found but I did find us in her FAQ mentioning a key necklace with a link to our shop, apparently people frequently asked about it, which is fun :)
As it now has been about 5 years and traffic still continues I googled Erin Morgenstern, she is the best seller author of The Night Circus! And our necklace can be seen in interviews from tv, here is one on youtube for example, the necklace she wears is our All My Secrets Are Behind A Lock...
I'm going to buy her book as the reviews look promising, and I love magical books :)
