Tender Loving Care

This sad little ottoman had quite the make over with some TLC. All four legs were wobbling, its filling all out of shape, fabric faded, staples rusted all in all a sad little pouf.

You might remember this photo were I had already removed the fabric and the guts of the ottoman and started painting.

I love stripes but every time I want to paint stripes I remember how much I do not enjoy them, but I love the result so these won't be my last stripes :)

The vintage black and white trim is to cover up the staples that hold the kilim to the pouf.

I'm so happy how this one became! Only the filling and the under fabric is new, everything else has a history.

Love how the kilim colors and stripes come back at the legs, of course this was the reason why I painted those stripes for hours in the first place :)

Look how sad the top was, the fabric was actually very bright in the inside it was now pastel from years of sun exposure.

The filling is higher than it was to accommodate the kilim without cutting it, not an inch went to waste :)

Here another sad detail of ripped fabric, dried out wood and rusted staples, the original upholstery was never well done but years did not help it either.

The completely made over pretty kilim ottoman is available at StarHomeStudio among other one of a kind furniture pieces.

Our Creative Space...

Today we had some lovely weather, not too hot not too cold so we brought our work outside to enjoy it. While mum is working on a new bag to felt, I'm working on a ottoman.

As you can see we were not the only ones enjoying the weather ;)

Old Turkish Tradition

I've just listed a beautiful large tray in our home decor shop.
This tray is handmade with carving and stamping in gorgeous motives. Most people know these from Morocco but they were also made here. Their purpose was as dinner table.

First a plaid table cloth was put on the floor or on the legs, then wooden legs and then, full with food would come the tray. People would sit around it and cover their legs with the table cloth to prevent breadcrumbs and such to fall on the floor.

Everyone eats from the same plates, except for soup. And even though these pretty trays are not used anymore this way of eating is still very common especially in villages but also in cities. It has the advantage that no large table with chairs are occupying the house and when you have guests you just st a little closer to make room for more people. Also less dishes are required. But it is also just an old habit, and people who are used to this find tables uncomfortable. Today they are usually made of wood and have collapsible feet attached to them.

Once dinner is over the tray goes back to the kitchen, so no walking back and forth as all go at once. The legs are flattened and stored till the next meal.

In magazines you usually see them as coffee tables, or against a wall. (image source: Paulina Arcklin)

Or hanging on a wall, our tray can be used in all those ways :)

Bohemian Morocco Style Home

Our latest furniture piece was easy compared to other pieces. No sanding and painting but there was a other thing to measure my  patience.
The fringe of the vintage embroidery was a complete mess, I had to untangled it an then braided it.

It took many hours to complete but the result was worth it, I like that the ends are like little tassels.

The embroidery is vintage and made out of silk, its amazing colors come all back at the side of the ottoman in 7 shades of velvet fabric.

I can totally imagine this ottoman in a Morocco styled home, like this one above.

I love the unusual shapes and beautiful colors of the embroidery.

It really reminds me of exotic places full of colors, texture and rich textiles.

Even its trim is exotic. The body was a wooden spool, very strong and solid and pretty heavy.
The ottoman is available at StarHomeStudio along with other one of a kind furniture pieces.
