In the Mountains

The pther day I went with some friends to another friend who recently moved to another town, a 1 hour drive from our town.

We brought some flowers for their new home and after a lovely brunch we went in to the mountains.

Because this town has no seashore and a much higher altitude the weather is cooler. But when we went in to the mountains we almost froze as it was very cold and we were totally not pepared for it!

We all did manage to take some photos between freezing, luckily our friends car had heated seats as we almost froze off our bums :D

Near the lake was chilling cold, and it has a very weird texture around it.

It seems that when the water became less it left an interesting texture behind.

We got higher and higher and it got colder and colder, and it turned out that we were not cold for nothing as we actually found ice! While our town was still 24 C (75F).

The landscape was rougher and intersting trees started to pop up the higher we went.

While it all looks lovely from the screen we were happy to go back to warmer places, next time we'll take our Winter gear with us :D

Coastal Christmas

Just listed a new seashell wreath perfect for both a coastal theme and Christmas. Christmas is quickly coming closer and as we will be away in December (last shipping date December 3) it is really time to think of Christmas gifts if you want it from our shops :)

Our sea urchin trees are back in the shop as well :)

And lots of ornaments!

We are finally having some hints of Fall, with some rain, cooler nights and leaves changing colors.

After our extremely long and extremely hot Summers we love this time of the year.

Still warm enough to wear t shirts during the day but cold enough to go under a blanket at night, perfect!

Mum's knitting project matches in color, not sure yet what this complicated looking thing is going to be.

But those red leaves are just small patches, we just started Fall and Winter will be here in December, before we know it Summer will begin again.

Flowers are still blooming and butterflies are still buzzing around, unfortunately mosquitoes as well arrrggg.

Our Creative Space...

We have two of these lovely chairs, they were an icky ugly brown which took many days to clean off. I'm now painting them in cheerful colors, matching some vintage embroidery (which you can actually see in the photos if you look carefully).

Can't wait to finish these, I think they are going to be quite smashing!

Vintage Toy Revamp

I'm still busy saving my photos, so no laptop yet. But that doesn't mean that we haven't been creatively busy.
This cute little toy crib is from the 1940's. Very shabby and very adorable, made in the same shape cribs were back then in Anatolia, Turkey.

With some brush cleaning and some black paint the body looked much better.

Then mum made a mattress, bedding and pillow.

The mattress is done the same style beds were made back then, between two layers of fabric there would be cotton, and it would be sewn together to keep its shape.

The blanket and pillow are made with a very traditional Turkish fabric.
Cribs were made without hardly any barriers as babies would be swaddled to the crib, so there was no way that they could fall out, needless to say that this system is hardly used anymore.

And I made an evil eye protection, as even toy babies can use some extra :)
The entire set is available at StarHomeStudio, perfect for doll collectors, especially folklore!

Proof of Life

Just a proof of life :) Our lack of blogposts are not due to a vacation or anything fun but due to the fact that my laptop crashed. I've been busy trying to save thousands of photo's, something I could have avoided. A waste of time and super frustrating, recovering files (850.000 of them) takes many days of scanning and exporting so I will make do with other gadgets for a while until I have recovered my stuff. I hopefully found the right program as another did not manage to save my things. Wish me luck and keep your fingers crossed!

Our Home Town, Marmaris

Our town was originally a village with its main income sources being fish and honey.

These days it is almost entirely built for tourism although honey and fish are still income for some.

Most of the city is newly built except for the restored castle and surrounding old town, which looks like a Greek town (of course due to Turkish long history with Greece).

The castle was reconstructed by Süleyman the Magnificent during his expedition against Rhodes.

The Marmaris Castle is one of the few castles in Turkey that also possesses a museum.

According to Greek historian Herodotus, the first city walls in Marmaris were constructed in 3,000 BC, although the only written source about the construction of the castle by the renowned Ottoman traveler, Evliya Çelebi, in his work Seyahatname.

Çelebi, who visited Muğla and its vicinity in the 17th century, says Sultan Süleyman ordered the construction of the castle before his expedition to Rhodes and that the castle served as a military base during the expedition.

An important part of the castle was destroyed during World War I by a French warship. Until 1979, locals of Marmaris inhabited the castle, which is known to include 18 residences, a fountain and a cistern.

The castle was registered as a monumental structure in 1983 and opened as a museum in 1991. (source: wikipedia)

The castle has quite the view!

It also has a museum with found coins, earth wares and artifacts found in this area.

Just like the whole town, even the museum has cats :)

And built around the castle is the old town, lots of the houses are used as restaurants but plenty are still used as homes.

I love its charm.

The little details here and there are lovely, some are a bit hidden.

Evil eyes are of course here and there..

And you get a peek of the castle from time to time.

I love places where the old charm is not ruined.

These statues were made a while back, and there are a whole bunch more at the marine and in town. I'm not a huge fan but most people seem to like them and they do give some extra playfulness.

Waterpipe hoses, not healthy but so colorful :)
If you ever book a vacation to our town come and visit us :)!
