Reclaimed Trashure

In Turkey having guests is a part of daily life. Very often still, women stay at home and these women often visit each other. Or families visit each other. No call or appointments, I know of families that have every evening a bunch of people over.
Before we had dogs we also got visitors, mostly neighbors, we hated it, lol :) As introverts, guests are exhausting and if those guests are people you have nothing in common with it is just a waste of time. Luckily the guests got less when our dogs became more, these days we get none, which is kind of perfect as we work from home so we really need the quiet and peace to be able to produce.

Why am I telling all this? Well with the number of guests typical Turkish families get, it is a standard thing to have nesting tables in your home. The more guests the more tables you need to put coffee, tea, fruit and such on it to be a good host. The table above was part of such a set, that is why the front is open so the other tables can fit in it. I found it on the curb with a tabletop all swollen by water, but the feet were pretty and solid so it came home. I have found such abanded pieces of such sets before, that is why I wanted to explain a little further, they are very common in Turkey. A good host has at least 4 such tables so when needed she can bring tea and coffee for 20 people at once. (I'm not exaggerating!!).

This sad piece got a makeover. First, the old tabletop and paintwork got removed.
I then cut driftwood and boat wood to create the top.

The wood got staple gunned to the table.

I painted the table itself rustically to match the top.

I added a driftwood branch (cut to size) to fill up the front gap.
And all wood I varnished to smoothen it a little and to protect the paint.

I love how it turned out!

Yes, I'm very satisfied, I love reusing things and turning them in something functional and beautiful.

This cool one of a kind table is available at StarHomeStudio.

When Life Gives you Lemons, make Lemon cake

Back in March someone gave me this bowl because I like 'old stuff'. I said 'thanks' but inside I was thinking 'ugh'. Mum however saw potential in this bowl that was missing a handle.

'We'll make a ship out of it', she said. I thought it would be a very ugly ship :)

We first thought of hiding the feet behind some pieces of driftwood but that would cover a lot of the 'ship' so I thought of removing the feet. Even with a torch they wouldn't budge so I took the bowl to town and had it cut with some more heavy duty tools as a hand saw didn't do the trick either.

Old knitting needles, drilled base and some Sugru (special silicone glue which was about the only new thing we used for this project) started to make this look like some kind of ship.

Then with wires the details on the mast.

And then spray painting it all white, as it was going to become a 'ghost ship' Mum said and finally I started to love it.

'It needs a Mermaid, a decent pirate ship has a mermaid on the front', Mum came back with a mermaid in 2 seconds, a piece she had bought about 10 years ago on Etsy and had been hanging in our atelier ever since. I bent the arms down and she was ready to be attached.

A light spray paint to let her blend in.

The sails, first with paper.

Then with Mode podged hardened vintage lace. A green plastic net (found on the beach) an anchor made of a beach found fish hook and some more details and paint...

Attached to an impressive piece of driftwood and this is not an ugly bowl anymore. I loooove it!

We scratched off some of the paint so that it still has some old charm.

The little flags are made of soft metal and match the wavy hair of the mermaid.

A definite one of a kind, if you have any ugly bowls, please give them to me :D

Our Creative Space...

The embroidery we used for this chair had a trim, and as we hardly throw away anything I wanted to use it for something. It was a bit damaged so not usable as trim but I thought they would make fabulous tassels.
So I decided to macrame a wall piece and then attach those tassels on that, I found the exact same shade of red yarn in my Mum's yarn stash and got to work right away.

After finally finding a good spot to hang it I wanted to make this piece but the thinner yarn, instead of thicker rope, made it very hard and I changed my mind after the first row.

I free styled it and constantly changed my mind along the way :)

Both the trim and yarn were completely used, and I'm so happy how it turned out!

The idea to put the beautiful driftwood branch in the center was as I did not have enough yarn to finish the fringe :) But I think it made it way more interesting so I'm happy that I did not have enough yarn.

The piece is available at StarHomeStudio among many other driftwood decor pieces.
