A Beautiful Day

Simon is completely recovered from his surgery, yesterday I took his stitches out, I prefer doing it myself instead of putting him through the stress of a vet visit. As he was alright we could finally leave the house and enjoy the sunny weather.

We took a different road again, The mountain roads are like a labyrinth, or a kind of maze around here, there are so many and all take you to different places, seashores, beaches, forests, mountains and villages.

After a ride in the wooded mountains we arrived at a little bay where the water was so clear that you could see what was going on in the sea.

We than had a wonderful walk in the forest, even the air you breathe is delicious in such places.

Around the trunks of the trees ivy's were growing slowly upwards.

We then drove a little further in to a different road and came to a magical place.

Even the shore was different than usual. It was very calm and mysterious.

Right there was a little house, what a view to wake up to.

When we approached the house we discovered that it was abandoned.

With nature slowly taking over the house. Coincidentally we came across the real estate agent who had just recently sold the property so I guess it won't be pretty like this for much longer.

The real estate agent was actually the only person we came across, we had the entire place for ourselves.

There was another abandoned house close by, this one reminded me of the little houses of a fairy tale.

With hopes to come across something magical I looked inside but unfortunately there was only rubbish.

Sunday Expedition

We had another wonderful Sunday, it is hard to believe that these are taken in November. We are still having wonderful weather and we are making use of it!

This week we drove in to another not visited road and we were glad that we did. We came across some small little bays with beautiful clear water. Boat owners were also enjoying the amazing weather, but all in all it was quiet and peaceful.

The water was so clear that we actually saw some beautiful critters in the water.

A huge jellyfish, little fishes were hiding near it.

And an octopus who gave several different poses to me.

Near this magical little bay we walked towards the woods.

We did not come across a single person, which is one of the advantages of going in to roads that most people do not go to.

We came across an old well, not in use anymore for a long time as it was mostly filled with mud.

Some forest beauties.

And deep in the forest a little fairy tale house, the witch was out collecting herbs :)

On our way back I saw a massive amount of cactus, twice my height. There was a stop sign among them, most likely put there when they were much smaller, but it seemed like the stop sign was for the cactus as you could hardly see it from the car.

These Sunday trips always gives us new energy, I hope you enjoyed it with us!

Marmaris, our hometown

This weekend was the start of the touristy season here in Marmaris. That is the reason that we wanted to share with you these pictures, taken a couple of weeks ago, with only locals in sight. A couple of weeks more and the deserted narrow streets will be clogged with hordes of tourists in various states of nudity and sunburns.

There is not much that is old in Marmaris, many of the old stone houses being damaged by an earthquake in the sixties and than demolished to make place for shapeless concrete, in the time when ‘picturesque’ had no value yet. The remnants of a badly over-restored garrison, here called ‘the castle’, do offer a great view over the harbor.

Thirty years ago, Marmaris was still a fisher’s village with orange grooves and sesame fields.
Now, they only fish on tourists and the orange plantations have made place for big hotels. In Marmaris mild winter, though, you still can see glimpses of the old charm and it is a great place to live.

The reason for us to choose Marmaris when we decided to move to Turkey was inspired by the fact that we didn’t speak any Turkish at that time. In Marmaris, being a touristy town, it is possible to make yourself understood with English, and had at that time already a big supermarket and a good hospital. The most important part, thought, is the fact that people are used here to the presence of foreigners, while in other parts, two foreign women living alone would be approached with mistrust.

And a bonus are the surroundings. You only have to travel for a few kilometers to find the most beautiful, quite and very green places.
