Now we need advice!

We went again today to visit poor Urchin and came back terribly despirited.
He does not try to stand up at all, so now the vet thinks that he may be paralyzed. It transpired that he only made x-rays of the leg that was obviously broken and not the pelvis or back.
The vet had no time for us and wanted to 'wait and see'.

And other bad sign is that he neither eats or drinks and it is terribly hot.
He still waggles his tail. Do any of you know if a paralyzed dog can do that?
This evening we will go back and try to force his hand to take more x-rays and put him on a drip.

Our own vet does not want him in his clinic because he stinks and this one (the one with the best facilities in town) has him outside in a cage covered with plastic. The poor thing is panting and will dehydrate in no time.

If he is paralyzed the chances to find him a home will totally disappear, we really are clueless what to do. What would you do?

  1. This is heart-breaking. Can you take him home and make him comfortable with a/c?

  2. Valerie, we have twelve dogs at home, six of them male. They would probably kill a wounded male dog unless we keep him in a room all the time.
Let's see if we can get more x-rays first. I am so upset because the guy operated on hem without a thoughrow examination.

  3. Poor, poor Urchin!
Sterkte xox

  4. I have a 11 years old cat, when she was few month old, she must have fell in a bad way. I came back from work and found her in a corner. She would not eat for a week (the 2d day we went to the vet who gave her a serum injection on her side)after a week she start to move, but was dragging her back paws, the vet thought had touch some nerves during the injection....after one year another vet suggested to have x-ray..and we realize that 2 vertebrae had solded together. If it would have been "fresh" he could have try to fix it..but after so much time it was not possible. So, slowly she got a bit better and was able to walk, but not to jump or run...she walk slowly and sometime she fell over..she is still alive, my sweetie...

  7. My mom is a vet and she said that he is not paralized if he could move his tail. Probably broken vertebra but not more. You have to believe in him and give him a chance to fight...and drink and eat.

  8. We took our Samoyed to the 4th of July fireworks here in Boston years ago because we didn't want to leave her at home all by herself. She was so upset by all the noise and banging and crowds and lights and explosions, she totally freaked out and collapsed on the way back to the car. I thought that dog is going to die from shock. When we got back to the house, she just sat in the garden. Then I noticed that she couldn't get up again and couldn't move her back legs. It was heart breaking. She must have had such a dramatic shock that she lost use of her limbs.

She was fine the next day, but needless to say we never ever took her someplace noisy like that!

Hope Urchin recovers, he looks like such a nice dog. Can't imagine why anybody would hurt him like that!
