Monarch Butterflies

I've cut up another vintage tin box to make these earrings today. I kept them pretty simple and they got an oxidized finishing for an aged look, the ear wires are sterling silver.
While making these I remembered some amazing images I saw of Monarch butterflies so I looked them up.

Monarch Butterflies go to the South to survive the Winter. Most butterflies from the US go to Mexico and gather together, millions of butterflies all adorning tree trunks.

There was a huge decline in these beauties but the past 2 years they have increased from 33 million to 200 millions, still pesticides, destruction of their habitat and extreme Winters can cause for large declines in short times.

 If you would like these beauties to visit your garden and want to help out:
-Plant native milkweed
-Avoid planting tropical milkweed
-Avoid using herbicides or pesticides in your yard to control weeds, as they harm butterflies, and other valuable insects.

Butterflies

As promised in the previous post, here are the results of our butterfly experiments!

The spoons are 'unheaded' and have vintage finds as heads, to prevent scary looking insects we used a vintage watch face, vintage rhinestone and a large vintage rose.

The wings are all made with vintage fabrics and lace, and as you know the bodies are vintage silverware, recycling at its best :)
The butterflies will be listed in the coming days in our giftshop.

This is all the information to be had about butterflies in this spanish encyclopedie from 1934. But what it lacks in the info department is made good by this beautiful litho.
It was all we needed for our new project involving old silverware that may be from 1934 as well!

Wire, lace, gauze and old findings put together will give us some very special lepidoptera indeed...

Fluttery Visitor

We had a lovely fluttery visitor the other day. Usually they fly away right away, but this little guy wasn't afraid and allowed me to picture his beauty.

As he was on glass I could also picture his body. And yes, cleaning windows is not our most favorite activity :)

A BIG Thank You

Yesterday a few packages were waiting for me at the PostOffice. As mum does all the supply shopping I have no idea what comes in, although they come to my name. Among them was a package from Norway, no name of sender. When I came home I gave the packages to mum and then she discovered that that one was for me, a wonderful suprise from IngerMaaike.




An amazing nuno felted butterfly scarf, so me!! I totally love it, pictures don't do any justice and am totally speechless!

A little peek in our home

Before we started making jewelry, we used beads for embroidering and also to make 'insects' that are still flying from the living room lamp.


Most of them are made by us, but sometimes a house guest would get the request: 'do make a bug', so some guest's bugs are also present here.
