Not for veggies

Sometimes, we go to the weekly market in the adjacent province of Aydin. This is a two and a half hour drive from home, but it is very interesting. The province where we live, Muğla, is totally dedicated to the tourism industry, with two well known bath places within its boundaries, Marmaris and Bodrum.

Aydin has touristy places of its own, but is mostly what always was, an agrarian community that prides itself in its fertile earth. All kind of veggies grow in Aydin, but it has also very large cotton fields.

We don’t go to the market for the veggies, thought. There is a section of the market called the trousseau market, where oya’s can be bought, along with all kind of crocheted and embroidered doilies and such, and there it is where we go, mostly.

The weekly market is enormous, sprawling through most of the inner city. Thousands of people, from the city and surrounding villages come to buy or sell. And in the hand of every woman and of many men, are big bags made of woven plastic strips in all colors.

And those bags are amazing. There are not only very strong, but the resulting wave is beautiful in design as well. Most of those bags are very big, capacious enough for a week of groceries, but we searched long till finding smaller ones, and have converted them in the coolest, cutest bags. Not exactly for veggies, but for all the needs of the city girl.

Blossoms

After a week of rain and stormy weather, we have a lovely sunny day today. It can change every second because it is still rain time here, clouds are ready to close the sun. We are not complaining, it didn't rain much last year and we had daily forest fires which is a terrible experience when it is just a few hunderd meters from your house. Last year we had a very close fire and we where very close to loose everything. When the forest fires start and you see the fire helicopters flying up and down from the sea to the fire, you think a lot about the people and their houses and feel sorry about the lost of hunderds or thousands of trees and animals, which will take years to recover and become again as it used to be...

After the rainy days, every thing looks so fresh and green, just wanted to show you a tiny piece of that greeness. I took these picture here at the garden of our workplace...

These are the blossoms of a lemon, orange and pear tree, it shall take a while till the fruits will appear...

Shopping in Izmir

Yesterday we went to Izmir, a big city with a population of 6 million, a 4 hour drive. More important about Izmir is, you have great BIG supply shops he he...

To give you an idea how the 'road' and Izmir is, here are some pictures...

I find these rocks incredible, never have seen anything like this elsewhere, only one small part in Turkey has such kind of rocky mountains...

Beautiful views are constintantly around us, unfortunatly you can't stop everywhere because of the high mountain road.

And Izmir...the huge chaos, the mixture of old, historic and new in such a different way....

By the time we got to the supply shops, I was a little to busy with choosing goodies, to take more pictures.

All by all it is always wonderful but exhausting, we hit the road at 7 a.m. and were finally home near midnight.

April Fools' Day

Still a good joke - 51 years on

On April 1, 1957 the British news show Panorama broadcast a three-minute segment about a bumper spaghetti harvest in southern Switzerland. The success of the crop was attributed both to an unusually mild winter and to the “virtual disappearance of the spaghetti weevil.” The audience heard Richard Dimbleby, the show’s highly respected anchor, discussing the details of the spaghetti crop as they watched video footage of a Swiss family pulling pasta off spaghetti trees and placing it into baskets. The segment concluded with the assurance that, “For those who love this dish, there’s nothing like real, home-grown spaghetti.”



The Swiss Spaghetti Harvest hoax generated an enormous response. Hundreds of people phoned the BBC wanting to know how they could grow their own spaghetti tree. To this query the BBC diplomatically replied, “Place a sprig of spaghetti in a tin of tomato sauce and hope for the best.”
To this day the Panorama broadcast remains one of the most famous and popular April Fool’s Day hoaxes of all time. It is also believed to be the first time the medium of television was used to stage an April Fool’s Day hoax.
