The Sky is the Limit

I've finally finished a project that has been hanging around for ages. A little landscape in a shadowbox made with driftwood and boat wood.
I kept it pretty primitive giving it something naive like a kid's drawing.

Due to the little clouds I think it looks great with our bigger driftwood clouds, and somehow in my opinion, this combination would look great in a nursery and/ or kid's room. They are both available in our decor shop.
I then thought it would be fun to check out nursery clouds on Pinterest, and found out that I am not the only one who thinks that clouds look great in children's rooms.

These cloud shelves are adorable and are IKEA hacks, who doesn't love those :) As seen at limmaland.

I love this modern looking nursery, eventually it are the parents who have to enjoy nursery's the most, baby's don't really have any decoration opinions :) Found on Sklardesign. I actually would love a ceiling like this for my own bedroom too!

Cloudy walls made with handmade stencils are a wonderful idea, as seen in mermagblog.

I love this adorable corner with clouds, cheerful raindrops and rainbow buttons on the chair! So cute yet neutral gender made which I love. Source hypeness.

A cozy reading corner with plush clouds from projectnursery.

I guess clouds are, in some way, a cute way to say 'The sky's the limit' to kids :)

Raindrops Gathering

After an extremely hot October and November we finally had some very rainy days. Actually the amount of rain can get a bit overwhelming after months of dryness days of water pouring down, but once the sun starts shining again every thing seems green, fresh and lush and the air smells deliciously earthy.

Somehow on these rainy days I always feel like making a cloud, or two. I usually make small, medium and large sized driftwood clouds but sometimes when we find a very large suitable piece I make an extra large one. Actually the last one I made in such a size was last year, but finally this week I found a nice big piece and made a super large cloud with it right away.

I found it ridiculous to water the garden in November but as it was pretty hot and dry the garden got a little sad, it is now happy again :)

The other day it was cloudy but not raining for a bit and I took some pictures of new items. But the sun was playing hide and seek and with every few pictures the sun came out making the pictures with to much shade, so when the sun came out I took pictures of the plants with their pretty captured raindrops, and when the sun hided again I took pictures of the items I wanted to list, it was a fun game :)

I love how the plants keep hold on those precious drops and drink them slowly.

In the mean time my big cloud turned out wonderful, I can completely imagine it hanging on the head side of a bed making it a perfect dreaming place :)

This extra large beauty is now available in our decor shop, among with smaller driftwood clouds.

What do you love most about the rain?

Our Creative Space...

Today I was all day busy with making some new driftwood clouds as only one is left in the shop.
And thought it would be fun to show the steps it goes through to become a piece of home decor :) First of all we of course need to find cloud shaped driftwood. Luckily clouds do not have a specific shape but still most driftwood pieces do not resemble a cloud, I always get a smile on my face when I find a 'cloud' on the beach! Most clouds we find on a beach that is hard to reach and a 1 hour drive so we do not go too often, mostly in winter time when storms bring treasures and the beaches are empty.

Although they are usually dry on the beach, I never use the wood right away, best to allow them to dry for a few weeks just to be sure that they are not damp inside.
The next step is then to attach a hook system on the backside so that it can be hung on the wall and little hooks below to attach the raindrops.

They then get a coat of white spray paint, I do not over do this or they would become white blobs, instead I give them such a layer that you see the beautiful cracks and texture of the driftwood very well, creating more dimension to the clouds.

While the clouds are drying it is time for the rain drops, which are vintage chandelier crystals. I give them a solder edge with the tiffany technique, the small crystals are hard to foil as they are so small, this prepping takes me several hours as I always do more clouds at once.

And then they need to be fluxed and soldered, again the small ones are tricky and I usually end up with several first degree burns on my hands and sometimes on my legs as the melted solder drops sometimes, ouch. Luckily we have air conditioning in our atelier as it is still about 45 degrees Celsius here (113 F degrees) and soldering is a hot job, I most likely would melt too :)

After soldering the flux gets all icky and black and needs to be cleaned.

Cleaning it thoroughly is very important, any flux residue will cause for oxidation of the solder which becomes pretty ugly. I used to do the cleaning with a nail brush and soapy water but discovered that our tumblr does it better without me breaking my back so I keep it in there for several hours and it comes our sparkling clean.

Now that the raindrops are ready it is time to arrange them to my liking.

I then measure the distances between the cloud and the drops and cut chain pieces accordingly.

Once all chains are ready it is time to attach them with special clasps, the drop to the chain and the chains to the clouds.

And tadaaa!

The clouds are finally ready, just in time to take some pictures before the sun went down :)
They will slowly appear in our decor shop, StarHomeStudio.
